Hi, I’m Susan Ward

Accredited Mental Health Social Worker

I am an experienced, solution-focused Accredited Mental Health Social Worker. My career has spanned across four decades which has included experience working in Queensland Health, other Government departments and private agencies.

I work with all adults (and young adults 16 and over) and have experience working with these age groups and in all health settings, including hospitals, community health, remote with Indigenous communities, groupwork, and personal growth work. I assist clients presenting with trauma, chronic illness and pain, loss and grief, behavioural disorders, carer stress, workplace difficulties and conflict, interpersonal violence, social anxiety, stress and depression, family and relationship issues, identity issues and maintenance of intimacy.

My approach to counselling is from a strategic, strengths-based approach. In a strategic, strengths-based approach, the Social Work role becomes one of support/facilitator/coach in assisting the identified client to negotiate major life transition points and make choices in such a way that longer-term outcomes will be emotionally and psychologically manageable, as well as physically manageable. The client is expert on who he/she is, and where they are travelling, and that, after all, is the goal of the intervention.

Some of the interventions I use include interpersonal therapy/psychotherapy, CBT, psycho-education, conflict resolution, parenting skills, social skills training, stress management, anger management, problem solving skills and training, couples counselling, work-related process and issues. I have experience with counselling the Veterans community, aged care, families and individuals in developmental change.
