This week we will be taking a look at a fun podcast with a different twist!
Popcorn Psychology is a podcast where three licenced clinical psychologists psychoanalyse movies. While this podcast is purely for entertainment and enjoyment purposes, it provides an interesting insight into the behaviours of characters and decisions behind some of our favourite media.
Each podcast episode covers one movie, and discusses the characters, relationships between characters, and key themes of the movie. The discussion then moves towards any relevant diagnoses for the characters the psychologists would like to suggest, and their recommended approach to treatment.
We have enjoyed learning more about the motivations behind character’s behaviours and the identification of dysfunctional and unhealthy behaviours with a focus on treatment.
Episodes that we enjoyed included the ones on 10 Thing I Hate About You, Beauty and the Beast, and Barbie. Other available episodes cover The Hunger Games, franchises from Marvel, DC, Harry Potter and Star Wars, and classics such as The Addams Family among others. Major psychological themes are also identified in the episode titles, such as narcissistic personality disorder and its impact on family dynamics for Fantastic Mr. Fox. This makes it easier to identify any sensitive content for viewers, and also select an episode based on interest.
For a refreshing look at psychology within popular media, Popcorn Psychology is a great place to start.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
