This week we wish to introduce another podcast to you. Hidden Brain is a psychology podcast hosted by Shankar Vedantam with a focus on storytelling.
Guests and their narratives are sourced from around the world, with the experiences they share being seamlessly interwoven with psychological theory and research.
In particular, we enjoyed the episode on why trying too hard can backfire on you. Stories in the episode covered social interactions, performance in a number of fields, and sleep. The conversation then turns to ways to overcome trying too hard and overthinking.
The episode on befriending your inner voice is also very interesting. We resonated with the section on creating distance between yourself and your inner voice and speaking to yourself as if talking to a loved one. This is known as distanced self-talk, and increases objectivity and reduces reactivity when thinking about our problems. This episode also includes an interesting narrative about the challenges of someone who lost their inner voice due to a medical incident.
The strong use of narratives in this podcast to illustrate topics in various ways grounds the sometimes-daunting psychological concepts in reality. They also remind us that what we are talking about is fundamentally human, and something many of us can relate to.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
TCS Team
